The two places

Getting to know them.

Central region

Wakiso

Wakiso is where Kampala spills over. The district wraps around the capital, takes in lakeside towns such as Entebbe, and keeps growing as farmland turns into plots, rented rooms and half-built houses.

For a young person it can feel as if opportunity is one taxi ride away and still out of reach. For a family the pressures are close to home: rent, school fees, the cost of getting anywhere.

Eastern region

Busia

Busia is one of the busiest crossing points between Uganda and Kenya. Traders, drivers, boda-boda riders and market women make a living from the movement of goods across the line.

It is lively and it is precarious: income that comes and goes, young people drawn into informal work early, women running stalls with nothing saved behind them.

What they share

Different places, the same families.

Look closely and the two districts share more than they differ. That is why one set of focus areas serves both.

  • Women carry a great deal

Households and small businesses run on women’s work, yet women often have little say over the money.

  • Young people are ready

There is no shortage of energy or ambition. What is short is a fair way in to training and work.

  • Families live close to the edge

One illness, one failed harvest or one missed term can undo a year’s progress.

  • People already hold things together

Group leaders, teachers, volunteers and neighbours do it every day. That is where we begin.

Not in these districts?

You can still work with us.

Our programmes are based in Wakiso and Busia, but NGO Support is open to small non-profits across Uganda, and we are glad to hear from partners further afield.

Know these places well?

Community leaders, teachers and neighbours see what we can’t. If you would like to share what you see, we would like to listen.
